Coconut Oil Benefits and Cholesterol Reduction

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is present in the body cells and the blood. The cholesterol can either be formed within the body or from the food substances that we consume regularly. An optimal amount of cholesterol is required by the body to perform normal body functions such as the formation of new cells, hormones and other regular metabolic activities. However, too much cholesterol in the body can lead to their accumulation in the blood vessels leading to abnormalities such as the reduction in blood flow through the affected blood vessels. These abnormalities are more pronounced when the organs affected include some major ones such as the heart.

Types of cholesterol

Broadly speaking, two types of cholesterol have been recognized; the good cholesterol (HDL) and the bad cholesterol (LDL). Good cholesterol protects the heart while bad cholesterol affects the normal functioning of the heart. Triglycerides are another form of fats which are also known to have a detrimental effect on the heart when present in high concentrations. It was noted across two studies that the HDL cholesterol levels increased significantly when foods rich in coconut oil were consumed. One study reported a 6.3% increase in the HDL levels while the other reported a 21.4% increase. These levels are quite significant and denote the influence of coconut oil on the good cholesterol levels in our body.

Virgin coconut oil has been shown to affect the levels of fats in the body positively. Regular consumption of virgin coconut oil, according to the researchers, reduced the bad cholesterols while increasing the levels of good cholesterol in the body. Virgin coconut oil, which is obtained from the raw coconut kernel, had better benefits than the regular coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil benefits individuals suffering from high cholesterol levels by lowering cholesterol levels in their body. Furthermore, a process known as oxidation is known to reduce the levels of good cholesterol in our body. Virgin coconut oil was noted to prevent this process thereby maintaining the levels of good cholesterol in the body.
